This is our "sustainable thinking" for the Brennan's master bath remodeling project done in September 2007.

Green Aspects

  • certified european Green Label tile
  • dual flush toilets...lowest water usage in the industry... replace 2.5 gal toilets
  • Pittsburgh low VOC paint
  • compact florescent bulbs
  • Energy Star fan...high cf/min/kw
  • purchase flow constrictor for shower head (Christine)
  • Took some of the parts packing material to eBay Mailbox store for reuse.

No Waste

  • Peggy told them to clean their brushes with rainbarrel water
  • Reuse a 1.6 gal toilet
  • Reuse copper piping
  • Recycle all the metal (SOCCRA)
  • wood with nails ...little reuse...pull nails (SOCCRA) .. reuse wood in A2
  • fan reuse in other unit
  • Recycle cardboard
  • Used current tile as subfloor

Reuse Center

  • Fan/light?
  • 2x4's
  • toilet?

Research

  • old toilet .. take to reuse center...may not take...research
  • drywall / dryrock ... new drywall recycling process gypsum recycling process
  • insulation ...
  • shower pan
  • tile...very little in a shower is reusable
  • Carpet protectors

Learned

  • had to use new 2x4 on curb to make sure they were straight for tile. Old were bent.

Could Do Better

  • Insulation...used fiberglass...didn't ask for wool or celulose
  • trim paint ... not low VOC ... needed to match exactly
  • toilet and tile were shipped overseas
  • Adhesives and glues
