return to Water

Why It Matters

  • Water is not like oil. If all the oil on earth disappeared tomorrow, the world would be a very different place, but it would survive. If all the water on earth disappeared however, life would come to a screeching halt.

In The News

  • Environmental officials in Michigan are gearing up to battle hydrilla, a water weed that could show up soon in state lakes. Michigan is home to more than 140 invasive species, but this one is especially fearsome.
  • Minnesota has put the first oar in the water by approving a Great Lakes-wide Compact that limits diversions and makes sure the states and provinces abide by a common set of rules to protect the liquid wealth that holds the region together.

What You Can Do

  • Be Informed. Support legislation that will control impacts on the environment and human health.
  • Support sustainable and humane agricultural systems that are environmentally safe and species appropriate.
  • Volunteer your time and/or support organizations whose mission is to preserve our freshwater resources:
    Adopt-a-Beach
